"We live in a van, and if it's down by the river, well then, that makes it all the more scenic." ~Meghan
We camped at Grandfather Mountain Campground off Rt. 105. It was a beautiful campground with lots of nice sites. Some had great views of the mountains surrounding the campground and the profile of the old man on the mountain range. We were by a nice stream, very peaceful and relaxing. Our last road trip in 2009, we traveled in a Kia Spectra for three months going all over the country. We had to set up a tent every night, in any sort of weather. The worst was when it would start raining in the middle of the night and if it was still raining in the morning, you had two options: wait until it stopped raining to get out of the tent to pack up, or pack up a wet tent in the rain.
Now, we have Arthur- our home on wheels. When we got to the site all we did was pull up, crack open a couple of local beers, went for a walk around the campground, and then started a little campfire. We went to bed and it had started raining a little bit during the night- but no worries, all we had to do was get out of bed and crawl into the cab and drive away! No packing up and reorganizing required.
We are looking forward to this less-stressful form of camping. Although the negatives are really that our parking spot must be as flat as possible to be comfortable for sleeping. It's never fun to have one person constantly rolling over to one side pushing the other one off the bed, having gravity naturally pulling your covers off all night long, or having your feet higher than your head. Never take for granted having a level place to sleep at night.
